· Phallic Symbols: As a child, Hurston played with cornhusks, bars of soap, and doorknobs.
· Penis Envy: Hurston went to college, never got married, or had children. She was very masculine, and thus, did not conform to the traditional southern woman role.
· Elektra Complex: When Hurston’s mother died, her father abandoned his family. Hurston thus lacked a prominent father figure in her life to guide her to find a husband, and in effect, never got married.
